Reiki and Fibromyalgia

I first heard the term Reiki about ten years ago.  A friend who was really into Renaissance Faires, Pagan holidays, and wearing black told me she was studying the technique.  She wanted to be a certified Reiki master.  I was happy for her but admitted to her that I knew nothing about Reiki at all and was a little skeptical to say the least.  I really didn't think that someone could will my pain to go away by waving their hands across my back.  It just seemed rather odd to me.

I didn't let that stop me, however.  I really didn't have anything to loose but the pain in my back.  At the time, I did not know I had Fibro.  I was told I had arthritis, but either way, I was in pain at a young age and I needed some relief.  The session worked rather well.  I could feel my muscles becoming warmer and they did start to relax.  I also remember sleeping quite well that particular evening too.  Sleep has always been a rarity for me.  I take what I can get whether it be restful or not.  That night's sleep was very restful.

The term Reiki is from two Japanese words.  Rei meaning "God's wisdom or Higher Power" and Ki meaning "life force energy".  The technique is used for stress relief.  It also promotes healing and relaxation.  This technique was developed by Dr. Mikao Usui after a retreat he took in 1922.

Reiki is now an excepted form of healing and a lot more popular than even ten years ago.  The Spring Issue of The Door Opener is dedicated to this wonderful technique.  You can read heartfelt stories on how Reiki changed some people's lives, as well as, how Reiki can used in surgical healing.

There are many places that hold Reiki classes for healing purposes.  Some are done by churches and others can even be found at New Age shops.  You can find a class in your area by Googling Reiki classes by your state.

I really liked the session I had many years ago.  It left me so relaxed that I had very little pain to speak of-- even the next day.  It's definitely something that I have to take up again because I believe it can help with Fibro symptoms.  Many Fibromyalgia symptoms tend to worsen when highly stressed and Reiki can help by elevating some of it.  It might be worth a try for some of you too.

Stay fabulous!
Love and friendship,

Kimberley
